5 tips for running a successful auto repair business
Five habits that set successful auto repair businesses apart: team training, garage software, customer service, a strong online presence and time management.

Running a successful automotive repair business takes three things: strong technical skill, excellent customer service and disciplined management. Most workshops are good at one or two of these. The ones that grow steadily, year after year, work on all three.
Here are five tips that make the biggest difference, with practical steps for each.
1. Invest in ongoing training for your team
Vehicles are changing faster than ever — more electronics, driver-assistance systems, hybrid and electric powertrains. A team that stopped learning five years ago will increasingly have to turn work away or, worse, get it wrong.
What to do:
- Build a training calendar. Plan at least one short session a month, rotating between technical topics, customer handling and safety.
- Use your suppliers. Parts brands, lubricant companies and equipment makers often run training for workshops.
- Learn from comebacks. Every repeat repair is a training case. Discuss it with the team without blame and agree on the fix.
- Develop service advisors too. Advisors who can explain work clearly and estimate accurately improve both customer trust and revenue. See our guide to hiring great service advisors.
- Cross-train. Make sure every critical skill is held by at least two people, so one absence does not stop a job.
Training is also one of the most effective ways to keep good technicians — people stay where they keep growing.
2. Use garage management software to run the business
If your workshop still runs on paper job cards, a billing program and a notebook for parts, you are losing time and money you cannot see: parts used but not billed, estimates never followed up, customers who quietly stopped coming.
Good garage management software brings everything into one system:
- Appointments and online booking, so you can plan bay and technician capacity
- Digital job cards with history, photos and checklists
- Estimates and approvals shared with customers on WhatsApp
- Inventory that updates as parts are issued to jobs
- GST/VAT-compliant invoices and integration with accounting software
- Reports on revenue, margins and technician productivity

3. Deliver excellent customer service
Customers rarely know whether a repair was technically excellent. They know whether you were honest, kept them informed and delivered when you promised. Those are the things that drive repeat visits and referrals.
What to do:
- Listen first. Record the customer's complaint in their own words on the job card.
- Estimate clearly. Separate parts and labour, and explain what is essential now and what can wait.
- Never surprise the customer. Get approval before additional work, ideally with photos of the problem.
- Keep them updated. A short message when work starts, if anything changes, and when the car is ready.
- Follow up. Check in a few days after delivery and send a reminder when the next service is due.
- Handle complaints quickly. A problem resolved well often creates a more loyal customer than one who never had a problem.

4. Build a strong online presence
Most new customers will look you up online before they call. If they cannot find you, or find poor reviews and outdated information, they will go elsewhere.
What to do:
- Claim and complete your Google Business Profile with accurate hours, services and real photos.
- Ask every satisfied customer for a review, and reply to all reviews professionally.
- Keep a simple website that loads fast on mobile, lists your services and makes booking easy.
- Be active on one or two social platforms with real content: before-and-after work, short tips, team introductions.
- Make booking possible online, through a booking page or WhatsApp, not just by phone.

5. Stay organised and manage your time
Owners of growing workshops often become the bottleneck: every decision, every escalation and every payment goes through them. Staying organised frees you to work on the business instead of only in it.
What to do:
- Start every day with a short huddle to review the day's jobs, parts availability and expected deliveries.
- Track a few key numbers daily — vehicles in and out, revenue, estimate conversion, technician productivity. See 5 KPIs every workshop owner should track daily.
- Delegate with clear processes. Write down how check-in, estimation, parts issue and delivery should work so your team can run them without you.
- Block time each week for planning — pricing, hiring, marketing and equipment decisions.
- Use technology for the routine. Reminders, confirmations and reports should be automated, not done by hand.
Bringing it together
Success in automotive repair is rarely about one big decision. It comes from training your people, running on good systems, treating customers well, being easy to find and managing your time. Pick the area where your workshop is weakest and work on it for the next 90 days.
GetAFix helps workshops do this every day — from digital job cards and inventory to WhatsApp updates, service reminders and live dashboards. Compare plans on our pricing page or book a demo.
